In the 19th century, every prosperous farm had a carriage house. A carriage house was a separate building from the main house. It was a landing spot for their horses and buggies. Dormers, shutters, a straight roof ridgeline and a large area for the houses / buggies were common elements of this design.

Modern “carriage houses” have a wide variety of designs. The modern garage door is the extension of the “carriage house” barn door, required to protect the buggies and tools.
